Cuba participates in the World Telecommunication Development Conference

Cuban delegation headed by the Vice Minister of Communications, Ernesto Rodríguez Hernández, participates in the World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC) being held in Kigali, Rwanda from June 6 to 16.

With the theme "Connecting the unconnected to achieve sustainable development", the WTDC is a unique opportunity to formulate innovative approaches and new models of collaboration in connectivity and digital solutions in this last Decade of Action to achieve the SDGs.

In the opening session Houlin Zhao, Secretary General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) recognized the progress made in the last 5 years in reaching 5 billion people online, however there is much to be done as almost a third still remain unconnected, it is necessary to continue developing infrastructure and accessible services and called on member states to foster the spirit of collaboration of the Union and continue working for the ITU to be recognized not only as a technical agency but also as a development agency.

The opening ceremony was attended by the President of the Republic of Rwanda, Paul Kagame.

In Cuba, more than 7 million 500 thousand people access the Internet by various means, with mobile telephony being the most widely used channel, as more than 80% access the Internet through a cell phone.

The population of the country's 168 municipal capitals has 4G coverage and 1,112 popular councils in the country have at least one way to access the Internet.
