World Telecommunications and Information Society Day (WTSID) is celebrated every May 17. This date was chosen in 1969, commemorating two significant events: the founding of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention, in 1865; in order to raise awareness in the world community about the use of the Internet and other ICTs, aimed at reducing the digital divide in some societies and economies of the world.

The development of telecommunications has had a positive impact on society, facilitating communications and the development of productive activities.

The central theme for 2022 is "digital technologies for healthy aging".

Cuba supports initiatives and projects to empower different priority groups such as children, women, the elderly, among others. In the case of work with adults, the GeroClub is implemented throughout the country by the Youth Computer and Electronics Clubs (JCCE), a space created for the elderly to approach Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and thus contribute to the National Program of Comprehensive Care for the Elderly.

In addition, the development and modernization of the technological and telecommunications infrastructure continues, as a dynamizing factor of the economy, in order to advance in a sustainable and sustainable manner in accordance with the economic possibilities of the country.

The Minister of Communications, Mayra Arevich Marín, congratulated everyone from her official Twitter account by posting:

"#Cuba prioritizes the development of telecommunications infrastructure, in the interest of building capacity at all levels to ensure the accessibility of #ICTs. For a safe Internet use, the welfare of its seniors and the development of the country. Congratulations."
