The resolution dictated by the then Communications Secretariat in 1939 to create a Postal Museum in Cuba was fulfilled with its opening on January 2, 1965 in its current seat at the Ministry of Communications. It was not until after the triumph of the Revolution that the dream came true, when serious material recovery and organization work was undertaken to conform the collections.

The main author of this heroic deed was José Luis Guerra Aguiar, who also carried out deep research about the history of postal services and philately, and left us several books and articles about those topics. His work ''Postal History of Cuba'' is, undoubtedly, a mandatory literary piece for those who want to know about such topics in the homeland of José Martí.

Among the most valuable objects portrayed in this museum is the Accounting Book of the first Postal Services Administrator, Mr. José Antonio Armona y Murga, who took office on March 1st, 1765. That was the most important position created in America at the time in the mailing services field.

A special highlight should be given to the Cuban Postal Rocket, which is an icon of the creole attempt that was carried out on October 15, 1939 in the capital city, with the goal of speeding up communication. Even though the experiment failed because the artifact exploded after being launched, a postage stamp was created based on it and it is considered the first in the whole world dedicated to the Cosmos. Visitors can see this rocket, which was the first of its type, and learn details about its rich history thanks to the guides of the institution.

Old scales; the postage stamps that travelled to the space along with the first Cuban cosmonaut Arnaldo Tamayo Mendez, in 1980; Cuban stamps from colonial times until our days; dioramas and other objects from all around the world and an excellent documentation center that is at the service of specialists and the general public. In that center, interested people can consult books, magazines and other materials, as well as specific consultancy from experts in the topic.
