Cuba celebrates International Girls In ICT Day

On April 28 Cuba celebrates, for the 6th time, the International Day of Girls in ICT, with the aim of contributing and designing programs, training and activities so that girls and women develop digital skills and thus contribute to reduce the gender gap in the sector.

Under the slogan "Access and Security", in this edition hundreds of girls, young women and women will once again exchange ideas to promote the possibility of guiding their studies and professions in the field of ICTs, so that there is greater female participation in companies in the sector.

The Cuban government promotes the development of information and communication technologies (ICT) to all sectors of society, the active participation of women and girls in all development programs of the Informatization process of Cuban society is proof of that, in accordance with the 2030 Agenda and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, among which are: achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. This SDG includes among its goals: to improve the use of instrumental technology, particularly information and communications technology, to promote the empowerment of women, reaffirmed in the "National Program for the Advancement of Women, approved on March 8, 2021, by the President of the Republic of Cuba.

Cuba has projections focused on increasing connectivity, developing ICTs and reducing the digital divide, promoting the use of these technologies as a tool for the development of knowledge, the economy and the teaching-learning process. In this sense, the country promotes equal access, from professional training to the occupation of managerial positions in companies associated with the ICT sector.

The International Day of Girls in ICT is an initiative endorsed by the Member States of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in Resolution 70 (Rev. Busan, 2014) of the Plenipotentiary Conference with the purpose of creating a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider pursuing studies and careers in the field of information and communication technologies (ICT).
