On April 22, Cuba celebrates, for the fifth time, the International Girls in ICT Day under the theme: "Connected girls, creating brighter futures."

The International Girls in ICT Day is an initiative that was supported by the Member States of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) through Resolution 70 (Rev. Busan, 2014) of the Plenipotentiaries Conference with the aim of creating a worldwide environment to empower and encourage girls and young women to consider the possibility of focusing their studies on the field of information and communication technologies (ICT) and lead a career in it.

Since the world health emergency created by the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the presence of people in digital environments, the ITU proposed that the celebrations be undertaken virtually.

In this edition, once more, hundreds of girls, young women and adult women will exchange ideas to promote the possibility of focusing their studies and work preferences on the field of ICT, so that there might be more female participation in the enterprises of that sector.

In order to contribute to this purpose, the Cuban government promotes the development of information and communication technologies in all sectors of society, an example of this is the active participation of girls and women in every development program of the Computerization of Cuban society, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 agenda of the United Nations (UN), particularly regarding this SDG: Achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls which has among its goals to improve the use of enabling technology, specifically focusing on information and communication technologies, to promote the empowerment of women.

Cuba encourages equal access to ICTs and has projections that focus on narrowing the digital gap. In our country, there's a wide participation of women in the use of information and communication technologies, in spreading their appropriate use and in coordinating policies, regulation, teachings, projects and initiatives that may favor a massive introduction in benefit of our economy and the life quality of our citizens.

From an early age, boys and girls alike receive computer science lessons, and such activities are part of all the stages of their education as a guarantee of the full development of women. Nowadays, it is a fact that Cuban women have high responsibilities in this sector, and they are not only present in the entrepreneurial world but also in the educational system and in the government.
