Fostering the use of new technologies and telecommuting are the main focus points of the Cuban agenda in the Latin America and Caribbean Internet Governance Forum (LACIGF), which concluded today on a virtual platform.

The event, which started on September 8, focuses on topics like the role of the Internet amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, on digital transformation and its acceleration, and the inclusion and use of the new technologies in a post-pandemic world.

In that context, representatives from the Cuban IT Union and from other organizations of the civil society joined the virtual dialog in this events 13th edition.

Some of the main subjects discussed by the Cuban representation had to do with the way in which people will have access to products and services after the pandemic, with the opportunities offered by telecommuting in the new normality, and the training of employees that work from home, as well as the tools and good practices for its implementation.

According to UIC, Cuba is promoting telecommuting in these health emergency times as part of the computerization of its society. The organization communicated through a press release that telecommuting has allowed the economy to keep going in spite of social distancing measures and mobility restrictions that have been enacted to avoid the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 (coronavirus), which is the cause of the pandemic.

On its last day, LACIGF will focus its sessions on participation chances for the community and the impact on the Internet policies of Latin America and the Caribbean, and also on the gender approach for technological policies.

This virtual gathering narrowed down its agenda because of the quick expansion of COVID-19 throughout the region.
On-site activities were due to take place in August, in the city of Santiago de Chile.
